  • To calculate the gradient, you must first store the initial activations, which can take up a significant amount of device RAM. Concurrency control (also known as activation reused and recycled) saves any subset of activations and recomputes the intermediary ones during the backward pass just-in-time.
  • The goal of mixed precision learning is to train a model with lower precision values (most commonly FP16). Modern accelerators may achieve significantly greater FLOP rates with lower precision numbers, saving your device RAM. The generated model may lose nearly no accuracy if handled properly.
  • Offloading is the process of temporarily offloading unnecessary data across separate devices and then reading it back when required. Simple implementations will significantly slow down training, while advanced implementations would pre-fetch data so that the device never has to wait on it.
  • Memory Efficient Optimizers have been developed to decrease the memory usage of the optimizer's operating state.
  • Compression may also be used to store interim results in a network. Gist, for example, compresses activations reserved for the backward pass, while DALLE compresses gradients before synchronizing them.

These were some other memory-saving designs.
